What Is Essential Oil?

What is an essential oil? Well, what is it not? Essential oil is a composition of oil obtained from plants and animals or some other animal. But what makes it an oil rather than other plant oils?

Plant oils can be refined to make any number of vegetable oil, animal oil and mineral oil, while essential oil is extracted from the flowers of plants and its leaves. So when we speak of essential oil, we have to think about plant oil extracted from flowers and leaves. Apart from flowers and leaves, oils also exist in the cork, bark, roots, leaves, seeds, berries, fruits, furs, feathers, wool, wood, droppings, glands, sloughs, excreta, stools, and glandular secretions.

While the simple meaning of the oil may not require much thought, when we understand that it is a compound composed of two or more types of natural compounds, we would get a clearer idea of its molecular structure. So as to know the definition of a component of essential oil, we need to go on to the more difficult tasks.

In aromatherapy, essential oils that come in any kind of essential oil packaging boxes are considered to be therapeutic agent. However, aromatherapy doesn’t directly involve plants or flowers. Instead, the plant materials are blended with herbs, incense, wood, resins, etc. to produce an aroma that is associated with certain health conditions. Thus, if there is a certain ailment that the patient is suffering from, an individual can turn to aromatherapy as a therapy and make use of the natural ingredients of the oils for relief from the symptoms and the root cause of the disease.

Different types of essential oils come in different colors and fragrances. The most commonly used is Rose. Other colors and scents include: Jasmine, Juniper, Peppermint, Larkspur, Orange, Apricot, Papaya, Lilac, Orchid, Gardenia, Lavender, Rosemary, Chamomile, and Gardenia. There are also essential oils that are being used in making perfumes and their fragrance has already become a status symbol.

Different companies manufacture various essential oils that are being used in aromatherapy. For instance, many of the oils being used in aromatherapy contain vital oils such as Citrus, Bergamot, Lemongrass, Ginger, Satsuma, Orange, Grapefruit, Rose, Juniper, Lavender, Tangerine, Geranium, Clove, Thyme, Marjoram, Geranium, Passionflower, Lavender, Vanilla, Rose, Clove, Cardamom, Neroli, Coumarin, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Grapefruit Seed, Satsuma, Bergamot, Oaxaca, Ginger, Jasmine, Rose, Mandarin, Strawberry, Jasmine, Bay, Lemongrass, Bay, Cherry, Juniper, Blackberry, Hibiscus, and Guava. These essential oils, known as scented essential oils, are said to offer therapeutic benefits.

Some of the essential oils are safe enough to be used in cosmetics and also used in perfumes. These oils are just one of the many essential oils that exist in nature. Essential oils are indeed excellent for one’s health.
